It's free to play and I've been playing it for a 100+ hours, the current roster is pretty decent you get to pick one free hero and then one will randomly drop for you after that you'll have to buy heroes with real money (g's) or unlock with eternity splinters which randomly drop during your playtime. They just patched the game recently and added Gambit as a playable character (of course I bought him being a big X men fanboy), they also added in a new area and new difficulty.
