This week's Guild Wars 2 report will focus on World vs World mechanics and tips. Even though, most people know what World vs World is, a brief recap will be done. World vs World is a large scale pvp arena which puts three servers against each other for a two week priod. It comprises of four maps. Three of the maps will be a home base to a server e.g. Isle Of Jantir Borderlands, Stormbluff Borderlands, Jade Quarry Borderlands. The fourth map is the Eternal Battleground which has all of the servers fighting for control of Stonemist castle. World vs World is scored by capturing Resource camps (5 points), Towers (10 points), Keeps (25 points) and the Stonemist castle (35 points). Every 15 minutes, whatever the server controls will be added to the overal points of the server. e,g, if a server has 4 keeps and 2 resource camps, they will receive 110 points. Depending on how much points your home server has gained, Power of the Mists will take effect. Power of the Mists are server wide bonuses that every player on the server will receive. The rewards are:
-
Artisan: 2% increased chance of crafting critical success.
-
Defender: 1% increased defense against monsters.
-
Energetic: 1% endurance bonus.
-
Gatherer: 2% chance of additional gathering node uses
-
Medic: Healing effectiveness increased by 1%.
-
Robust: Maximum health increased by 1%.
-
Scavenger: 1% bonus coin per kill.
-
Wisdom: 1% bonus experience per kill
Raiding supply Camps and stopping Dolyaks are important factors in the WvW war. They are important because Supply camps contain supply. Supplies can be used for several things in WvW:
-
Building siege weapons
-
Repairing towers
-
Repairing/upgrading keeps
Supply Camps
The only way to get supply is to go to a nearby supply camp which your server owns. Each supply camp can hold 100 supplies, when the supplies are finished, a Dolyak has to bring supplies from another camp to replinish the supplies. The Dolyak will spawn from a nearby supply camp to deliver supplies. If the Dolyak never reaches the supply camp, the supplies will remain at 0. Players can destroy an enemy Dolyak delivering supply and receive money, experience and karma.
It is critical to hamper an enemies access to supplies. Without supplies, there will be no construction of Arrow Carts. Ballistas, Catapults etc. Supply camps. Also, with no access to supplies, enemies can't repair towers or upgrade keeps. More than once I defended the tower and felt the pressure when there was no more supply to build an arrow cart or a catapult to stop the attackers. This is why doing small objectives such as raiding supply camps are an extremely important part of WvW. Even though players may not be able to successfully capture a supply camp, they CAN quickly destroy an outgoing Dolyak. One person can destroy a Dolyak relatively quickly, two people can do it in less than thirty seconds. Also, five points added to your servers overall score every five minutes can't hurt.
Towers
These are mini bases which players can take posesssion of. There are several upgrades which can be done on towers, which are hire merchants, hire guards, build weapons (pot of oil, cannons, mortars) or reinforce wallsand doors. To do these things requires money and supply. Towers can hold a maximum of 400 supply . For invaders to gain access to a tower, they can either destroy the main gate or they can destroy one of the walls on the tower. The gate has less life than the wall, but the gate is more heavily defended. One tactic which I think should be more implemented in WvW tactics is to attack a Tower from the rear, rather than the front or the side. Even though it will take longer, enemies will find it more difficult to defend a rear wall than any other position.
There are no 'meta' /best strategies for World Vs World. There are dozens of strategies which can be implemented and can be met with success. One time I came across a supply camp our server captured near to an enemy main Borderland stronghold and they set up six Ballistas, three Arrow carts and a Catapult . I asked them how long they had the supply camp for and they told me over two hours. Another time a group I was with was attacking the main gate of a tower, I pulled off an looked on the side and at the rear of the camp was another server also attacking the same camp with three Battering Rams and two Catapults attacking the wall. At that point I alerted my group of people and there was a gigantic three-way war....
Some thing to remember:
-
While being part of a 'zerg' rush will keep you safe, don't stay in the 'zerg' mindset. Talk to the people around you, suggest ideas to them and they will follow.
-
Contribute to the war effort. Buying a Flame Ram or an Arrow Cart can go a long way in the successful breach of a supply camp or a tower. Before leaving the main stronghold, purchase a set of blueprints at the Siege Merchant and at an appropriate time deploy them.
-
Being effective in World vs World will require you to spend money sometimes. It wasn't designed for players to make quick money or fast experience. Money will be lost buying blueprints or repairing armor. Don't be upset that you're losing money while in WvW. It is expected to happen, so brace yourself.
Next week, the siege weapons which can be purchased will be focused on.
Looking forward to seeing you in game,
