Epic Games founder Tim Sweeny holds a lot of sway in the game development world. Their Unreal Engine is the most used development engine in the gaming world. Top tier game series like Gears of War, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Borderlands and single titles like Mortal Kombat, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, DC Universe Online and Game of Thrones all beat with the same heart. Sweeny no doubt has a very influential voice across all genres from console to PC.

Having seen the technical specifications of future consoles Playstation 4 and Xbox 720 first hand he was not impressed. He believes that a "quantum leap" is necessary for consoles to keep the pace on innovation. Epic's Unreal Engine 4 is expected to power the next generation of gaming. This is what has driven them to take this plea public, and effort to ensure that both Microsoft and Sony will give them more powerful hardware.
“There is a huge responsibility on the shoulders of our engine team and our studio to drag this industry into the next generation,” says Cliff Bleszinski, Epic’s design director. “It is up to Epic, and Tim Sweeney in particular, to motivate Sony and Microsoft not to phone in what these next consoles are going to be. It needs to be a quantum leap. They need to damn near render Avatar in real time, because I want it and gamers want it—even if they don’t know they want it.”
