DayZ creator and lead developer, Dean Hall is adamant that the standalone version be launched this year for a low and affordable price.

While it may have taken a while for a mod like DotA to spawn commercial clones, DayZ drew a lot of attention in a short space of time. Titles like "War Z" and "State of Decay" are clones looking to cash in on someone else's creativity. Hall is insistent that his game be launched in December 2012 in a bare alpha state. The race to our wallets will be won and then he can comfortably continue to add new content regularly, starting in January 2013.
He has become wary with his ideas as of late. Hall knows all too well that anything he places into his game will appear in the clones. He is careful when talking about any new developments to avoid tipping them off. If his game must be cloned, he will remain ahead of the pack, always one step ahead. While he is not pleased with the clones, he looks forward to the indy zombie horror, "The Dead Linger".
At a recent developer conference at the Eurogamer Expo he mentioned diseases spreading through faeces and bodily fluids, being able to craft splints and use household items as weapons. A sign of making DayZ less militarised and more realistic.
