EA Sports took a bold step towards revamping their struggling NBA Live series after years of lost battles to Sega Sports 2K series. This year's launch has been cancelled in it's entirety. The problem seems to stem from EA's persistence that the same studio continue on NBA Live while trying to incorporate new technologies. This extended the development process beyond the launch window.
"We also made a commitment to deliver a high quality experience — this is what our fans expect and what we demand of ourselves at EA SPORTS. But making great games is not easy, and we're just not there yet on NBA LIVE 13. Having continued to look at the game over the past few days, it's clear that we won't be ready in October. And rather than launch midway through the season, we're going to sit out the full year and stay focused on making next year’s game great. This decision puts us on the right track for success well into the future in a rapidly changing industry." - Andrew Wilson, Executive Vice President, EA Sports

Already facing the prospects of poor sales due to market dominance from Sega Sports 2K series, it would have been an even bigger disaster to launch mid season. Now even EA's die hard fans will have no choice but to sample the competition. This builds up a lot of expectation for EA Sports moving forward. Without an absolutely blockbuster NBA 2K14 next year, they might as well kiss this franchise goodbye.
Only time will tell if this works in their favour or will it be the first step in the grave for NBA Live.
