I went into detail on the main site FAQ section. I guess it was in reply to a question from you.
Should the below not help ill go thru it with screen shots.
If you are using a router, or you are connecting via another PC on your network you can NOT host. The reasons for this is as follows for each situation
Router>(speedstream, netopia)
You host a game, the game opens a PORT on your pc and tells the server your ip. Your friend tries to join and by default tries to connect to port 6112(the port you open by default for SC) he then connects to router instead because the router is first in line.
NEXT PC>
You host a game, the game opens a PORT on your pc and tells the server your ip. Your friend tries to join and by default tries to connect to port 6112(the port you open by default for SC) he then connects to PC directly connected to the net instead because the router is first in line.
Other reasons>
Firewall is up.
Solutions-
Firewall
Disable Firewalls, NB Zone Alarm can be a punk, I would 'shut it down' completely. If you are an advanced user please configure your firewall to accept incoming information via TCP on port 6112
Router/Next PC
Configure your router to do port forwarding, each router is different. Ill list the settings
Get your IP address (local IP as in for the network)
Basically try and do the following in the port fwd section of your router config
Forward all information from port 6112 TO port 6112 of my local ip e.g (192.168.254.1) Note local ip will vary from the eg.
IN the event that you are using internet connection sharing, double click on your internet connection (network neighbourhood or in the tray) Properties>Setttings>ADD
Description>Battle.net
IP> Local IP eg(192.168.254.1)
External port> 6112
Internal port> 6112
