I'm on Vista Ultimate 32bit.

When I check task manager it says that a process is using x amount of ram. If I check process usage in another program ( tune-up utilities, for example ) it says about 5x

EG.

Explorer.exe

Task Manager - 20M
Tune up Utilities - 100M

Well.. I didn't really find the source of the different readings but today at work I did some more googling. What I did find out about Windows and their memory usage ( no bashing if you already know this please ) is that Vista is trying its darndest to pre-emptively populate every byte of system memory with what it thinks I might need next. They call it SuperFetch.

According to Microsoft, SuperFetch is:Windows SuperFetch enables programs and files to load much faster than they would on Windows XP–based PCs.
When you’re not actively using your computer, background tasks—including automatic backup programs and antivirus scans—run when they will least disturb you. These background tasks can take up system memory space that your programs had been using. On Windows XP–based PCs, this can slow progress to a crawl when you attempt to resume work.

SuperFetch monitors which applications you use the most and preloads these into your system memory so they’ll be ready when you need them. Windows Vista also runs background programs, like disk defragmenting and Windows Defender, at low priority so that they can do their job but your work always comes first.

So basically, if an application needs memory, the system removes whatever it needs out of cache to free up that memory, places what you need in memory, uses it, then swaps it back out.

Obviously you can disable Superfetch (Start > Run > services.msc) and Stop/Disable SuperFetch) to use our memory more efficiently if you do not hop through smaller applications. Will try this whren I arrive home to see if there is any performance increase on my system. Not really bothering about the readings from task manager or tune-up or anyother program as a matter of fact because CPU usage is always high with vista... Yes.. SuperFetch again.

There's also another service to disable as well. I believe it's paging executive. This is to stop the paging of memory to the hard disk. It will keep data in ram which results in improved performance.
