wassup, its been awhile. well i hav a canon sd 1000 which takes insane video and a 1 gig card. though the quality is exceptional, the files sizes are really hard to manage.

i was wondering if u can recommend any software that will lower file size without compromising video quality.

i hav almost used up all of my trial time on divx converter, which is pretty good, and your help wud be appreciated.

i recommend u jus purchase the divx converter as it works pretty well...
no other "free" converter would do the job as well

what format is the video from the camera ?

once u re-encode any video it loses quality no matter how high the bitrate may be set.

if you're feeling up to it get virtual dub mod + a bitrate calculator and re-encode it yourself :)

www.videohelp.com is a good place to start.

from my limited experiences with virtualdub, AGK, Dr DivX and Winavi, i would say Dr DivX is the most noo... errr user friendly of them all.

Winavi is the application that i settled with using together with xvid as a compression codec.

Xvid is free and is probably the best mp4 class codec available today.

Winavi is not free hoewever, but is the fastest video convertor available on the pc.

i agree that divx converter does the job well but pay for software is a last option.

the videos are avi and Geese that sounds kinda time consuming, i get use to draggin the vids in divx converter and pressing convert.

lol at mojo and noob friendly software but do u lose quality wid xvid?
is it noticable?

of course u loose qual with every compression...

i prefer divx to xvid... as with my vidz the divx wins... maybe i should try winavi to convert to xvid...

I say WMV. Its free with XP or higher and does damed good job. Combinded with WMA pro audio codec(the best audio compression imho), its a killer winner. If you hunt around you can get Dr DIVX for 6.99usd (well daz how much i get it for).

I made the switch from divx to xvid after reading all those reviews from experienced folk.

If any of you by chance went to the link posted by rb u would know what i'm talking about. xvid does superior compression compared to divx and is also a lot faster because of the amount of work that went into it!

How does a free product come out on top of a kickass pioneer in video compression in the long run? Easy! it's open source. Programmers all over the world have squeezed every last drop of juice from the xvid codec and there are many versions(mods) suited for individual needs. Meanwhile, divx has been stagnated and not making much progress because nobody buying they software anymore :(

I do use wmv9 for low bitrate files which are to be streamed online. IMO wmv streams work much better than other video formats. But for the high quality stuff, i stick to xvid.

Also if u dont mind sacrificing a little quality for a handful of speed, check out ffdshow encoder as well. ffdshow is what powers xbmc (xbox media center) which is a video player for modded xboxes and runs flawlessly
