Notebook woos...recovering data?

So a partner of mines, notebook gone on d rif
have some important shit on it, project etc, and basically windows isn't booting.

What alternatives can he use to recover the files?They are there , he ran dos from an xp cd, and saw them.

Hook up the hdd to another pc

well, if not that then he hadda try reinstallin windows WITHOUT formatting the harddrive.

not much else he could do with it. would be a paperweight otherwise.

well copy to a usb device after booting to dos or whatever

Google "bartpe"
Make a bartpe cd (basically a XP that u can boot from cd)

Alternatively
Use ubuntu,Berry, Mephis or opensuse Live Linux Distors to boot the laptop and copy files off.
