Its been 10 years since I left school
Its been 10 years since I first started making money of my artwork/graphics etc
Its been 10 years of me living life as a creative artist

I have a few sketches, drawing and musings from my ghosts of artists past, present and perhaps a glimmer of the future at my website. Take a look at http://www.zigwa.com for more.

Sacrifice. Sometimes I have been working whilst people going out and lime etc and what not.

Support. Help and encouragement from friends and family gores a long way (especially if you are doing something that doesnt sound like doctor or engineer etc)

Experiment and practice. Always work, always have little projects even when not getting paid, when you do get a job sometimes one of your experiments from before might come in handy.

Discipline. Be professional and get your work done, its not different from any other job that one person may doing (working for yourself is kinda hard in this aspect) Just settle down tho and plow at your duty and be on time with deadlines etc.

Promote yourself. Prepare a portfolio, have some cards/website/mailers etc and go out there and show your work, make proposals for projects that you will like to do and go after them.

I hope that helps in some way.

Now I am but over the years I worked with several news papers Guardian/Express and then I started freelancing on the side for various publications (currently mainly Caribbean Beat) I did a few things in the US here and there as well as exhibiting, eventually I just decided to work to for myself (wasn't easy at first but I kept at it).

I avoided Ad Agencies I felt they do too much bad in terms of your creativity and time (just my opinion) I just stayed away and learned stuff on my own research etc.
