I recently got my hands on Superman The animated series with some extra comment oriented material (popups/commentry etc). It was interesting to note how many things were introduced into the series as to make it more appealing to todays audience. Brainiac for instance was never from krypton (didn't know this).. this is kinda weird because smallville went along the same line that brainiac was a krptonian AI... Smallvillie and Superman TAS are both WB so I guess thats the link.
I prefer originality in these animations but in terms of superman's strength I would agree that having a hero that can toss a planet out of orbit (like in the comics) wouldn't have played off 2 well vs the present line up of foes. Superman battling with a plane in the first episode was kinda weird to me but I understood where they were going with it after hearing the producers views on the topic, they just didn't want to make him out to be a boring strong guy.
The focus with lois was more on her reporting rather than her love for superman but naturally 1 or 2 eps were based on their feelings. There were many incidents where she and clarke got into little squables over bylines which provided a little kicks as well as the 'how did you reach here so fast' lines. Maa and Paa kent are still alive and featured every now and then.
Foes include toyman, paracyte, lex luthor, metallo, mixyesstickx (whatever), livewire, bizzaro, lobo, darkside, random intergang noobs and the ever popular random alien from outterspace.
All in all its a great series for anyone to watch, there were a few crossovers with batman that were just awesome and imo were the best eps in the series.
The series has 3 seasons each with 18 episodes + extras, from there it continues on to Justice League.
