Have you tried configuring the modem via a webinterface?

a router is a device used to interconnect 2 networks.

a modem (short for MODulator/DEModulator )is an A-D and D-A convertor. We use modems to convert digital signals to analogue signals to transmit over phone lines, and convert them to digital when receiving.

a dsl router however, has a modem iside it. Think of it as a PC on your home network, which is directly connected to the internet, and sharing internet for all other pcs on the home network. Then, your router is effectively connecting your home network to your ISP's network.
