The PS3 is supposed to be backwards compatible with the PS2 and PSone but not in the way we may have thought. Due to emulation difficulties and an already set launch date, Sony has bitten the bullet and added more costs to PS3 development.
Every PS3 at launch will include PS2 hardware. Specifically the PS2's Emotion Engine CPU and the Graphic Synthesizer combo chip. Sony expects to discontinue the process once an 'efficient' emulator has been developed. Interesting to note that Sony themselves are having problems coding for the cell processor.
This also means that PS2 games played on a launch PS3 will see no tangible improvement in graphics or frames.
