So, earlier this week Androsovic, Crazy, Cereal and I were chatting about modding and whatnot and I was inspired to do a little X-QPack case (case suggested by my mang, Crazy, none other). So this is my log. Got case last night, still awaiting other components. Scheduled to arrive today.
Now the theme of the mod is SFF, simple and compacted as possible, but functional in every way. Tried my best to remain within my small budget... hey I'm an NYer and $$ don't grow on trees. That said. Lets get the pics up.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/GottheBOX.jpg
Ahhh the box arrived. I've been following the tracking status and according to UPS it was actually another package that arrived. I was Happy it was the case, atleast I can do measurements and minor mounting in the mean while to get my act together.

Like a newborn baby wrapped in a fresh blanket, so cute... I feel like such a dweeb

Rear of the case.

Empty mobo tray. Can't wait to have it filled up.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Bothrads.jpg
These are the two boys I intend on using. Very convinent for me, cause they are from my other water cooling set up which recently went bad due to the pump dying. They are threaded connectors, which can present a problem at a later date cause more commonly used are barbs. But I'll MOD my way around this ;)
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Sizingup.jpg
Started sizing up for the water cooling radiators. Figured I'd focus on the bigger cooler first. luckily it fits nicely across the 120mm fan.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Screwedonrad.jpg
Well I met a suprise, as my mang, andro likes to say "if everything fits right, something is wrong." he maybe fairly new to the modding scene, but great wisdom he is quickly coming to possess. Anyways, the screwholes did not quite match up. Novice mistake which I should have forseen. Listen! Quit pressuring me, I haven't done a mod in like a year so get off my back, alright!?! I worked it out in a simple yet very effective way. No. Not epoxy. A twisty, sorry you can't see it in this pic, but it's hard to see anyways. I clipped off the excess to make it as neat as possible. I also dropped a screw in the bottom as you can see in this blurry-ass pic. Had to make the hole with the all purpose rotary tool. Modder's best friend.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/DVDinstalled.jpg
Had to shut down current pc for a minute to extract some goodies, aka DVD-RW. it's black. Fits in with the theme nicely.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/HDDmounted.jpg
Another of the goodies that was extracted. 400HD SATA II. I haven't come close to using him to full capacity on other pc. Who the hell needs 700GB of storage. It was overkill to begin with, so hopefully he's more practically used in this pc.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/radsandblocks.jpg
Recycling is fun, especially when it saves money...hopefully. These are my two water blocks. GPU and CPU. I don't know if you can notice in this pic, but the ATI insignia is actually branded onto the copper face of the block from my GPU. LOL
Well that's all for now. More tonight or tomorrow. Hopefully.

At this time I have nowhere to put it. This mod is really going to take some brain power and some caressing. Space is tighter than I initially expected. The pump is also going to be a kick inthe ol' buttockz. :34:

STOP LYING!!
DAT AINT YO CPU!!
aye mc, measure the internal dist from psu to dvd drive for me dey. Need to make sure mine will fit.
camrachi-mishima
02-26-2006, 10:34 AM
Measurement between the rear of the DVD drive to the PSU is 2" EXACT.
Grrrrr. Still waiting on the rest of supplies right now. So I decided to put together what more I could while remaining space economical, as I still have a few big critical components that must fit.
Since I'm going with old faithful, UV CCFLs (which I great cause I had 4 of em laying around in the junk draw" I decided to cut out all the other light in the case. The 120mm fan that comes with the case has 4 LEDs (blue) can't have those, now can I.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/CloseupLEDfan.jpg
So I unsoldered a lead from each to keep it neat. Don't know if I'll want them later on, so I kept it on.
The RAM cooler I got was mainly because it was cheap and effective. They call it a "Crab Cooler", must've because of the way it latches on to the DIMMS with it's "pinchers", anyways, some genius at evercool must have had the bright idea to slap a couple multi-color "crab eyes" on it, which suck. Now the LEDS are nice, but they make the case look like a damn spaceship or a Christmas tree with the random pattern colorful blinking. No way I'm gonna have that caca in my case. So i dismantled and and once again, unsoldered a single terminal one each end of the LEDS.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Ramcooler.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Moddingcrabeyes.jpg
There you can see it's been soldered off.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Crabeyes.jpg
Now the CCFLS I got don't have the same size inverters (physical size that is) nor the same kind of plug, one has a three pin micro plug and the other has a two lead connector. I didn't want all the extra cabling as I simply cannot afford the space. So I spliced the second cable onto the first (better) one.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/UVCCFL.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/ModdingtheInverterpowerwires.jpg
Red or Black! Red or Black! GOT DAMMIT MANG I CAN'T TAKE THE PRESSURE! *camrachI wipes sweat off brow*
Well. That's it for now. Hopefully I'll recieve the rest of supplies sometime in the next century. <_<

Hmmm. I intend for this pc to be portable, I was a little iffy about the watercooling at first, but if I fix and fasten all my connections securely I should be fine. I will do some pressure tests with my hosing and connections before I install though. If my cot damn package would ever arrive!  :34:
A little update while I'm here. Last night I've been having some difficulty installing the OS over the weekend as the mobo seems to have a problem with the sata controller. I couldn't flash the bios because I don't have a floppy drive, and no patience to make a bootcd. I grew upset as I don't know why in the world in 2006 manufacturers are still making diskette-only bios flashing utilities. I eventually lost a 300GB HDD in the process of repeatedly moving it back and forth between my current pc and this project for diagnostic tests. I noticed that the HDD's gasket is actualyl bulging out the side of the HDD housing, leadingme to believe that heat got the worse of it. Well, gg sb for her for now, but I got a 2 year warranty on it, so it's RMA time.
In 1997 Apple said "if it's small enough to fit on a floppy disk, why not email it." And at that pint quit making and adding floppy drives to their PCs. I wonder why the rest of the industry can't adopt this mantra. Anyways, I'm going to purchase a floppy drive today (can't see it costing more than $5) to keep on hand should this stupid scenario occurr once again. Bummer. :34:

Just a suggestion for the space thing: thought about mounting that radiator and fan on the outside of the box? It'd give you a couple of inches to play with, but make the whole thing that much more fragile.
I'm guessing you wont be bashing it about anyway, so....
androsovic

yea we thought about that, but the whole idea of the mod is to fit everything INSIDE.If push comes to shove he can always get a custom made reservoir.

You will need to get a diskette drive borrowed, not to update your bios but to load the SATA drivers on to so the windows install will pick up the drive.
Explore your motherboard driver cd and look for the SATA drivers, there should be a section to MAKE DISK. During the windows install you should be prompted to hit a F key (think its 6 or 2) and thereafter asked to put in the disk.
AFAIK you can't do this using the CD

Yom good looking on the info, Para.
So on with the log. Supplies finally arrived.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Coolingsupplies.jpg
What you don't see in the pic is the hosing which turned out to be a bit large. They sent me the correct ID but wrong OD  :34: <_<
I started dissassembling as so far it was built just for the sake of "sizing up" all the components and to see how much space I would have. This is the result.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Allscrappeddown.jpg
Some mess of a machine.
I had been waiting for this little component that was gonna pop into a drive bay, also in now is my new floppy drive <_< .
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Itlookssosmall.jpg
Another look
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Partofthecosmetic.jpg
What a mess of wires
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Wiringup.jpg
So anyways, started reconstructing, still in halfway between final build and halfway between sizing up, cause I'm still waiting on my pump which I think may be too big for the case. while I find a lot of space that is just occupied by the cluster of wires oh and so many. Still not big enough for that pump from my eye.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Pinchers.jpg
You can also see the crab ram cooler pinchers.
Just cause I know you're so interested.

The result of the knew bay I put in
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Frontcase.jpg
Those UV meters are both temp gauges. I like them better than the digital thermometers. But i'll keep both.
Well that's it for now. Not much I know. Next up is gettin the pump, making it fit, if it possibly can, then putting together the entire water cooling system. At which point I will have to disassemble again to get the plates on the bottom and all that jazz.

Yeah as it is, no pump yet, so no water cooling. Last night I put together the cooling system, minus pump of course. to let it sit and look for leaks. I did find one, luckily it's on the alumininum radiator that looks like it's going to be sitting out this project. I really did want that second radiator in the equation as the case is so small, less hosing to run thru and more time in radiators being cooled.
These are the components of the cooler, again, minus pump.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/2004_0101Image0003.jpg
The pump I wanted pushes 350GPH (gallons per hour) and cost $7 more than the pump that may prove to be the perfect fit (95 GPH), if I estimated anywhere close to reality. Natrually, being someone who works hard for money, I went for the "deal" and ordered the stronger pump. while it's not large by ordinary means, in a tight fit like this, everything is large.
I'm not looking forward to installing the CPU waterblock either. It means I'll have to take up the mobo to get the reinforced plate on the rear side, which means I'll have to mess with all the cables and connectors again. At this point, cable management is a chore, the size of the case and the size of my hands don't match. It's like fitting a hotdog in a needle's eye.

03-03-2006, 10:44 AM
Hi again. Finally got pump yesterday and another suprise package as well
The suprise is my new cpu, I went with a opteron 144, as it was at a good price and Crazy suggested it for the o/cing ability.
What I didn't appreciate was the method and way the person shipped it. No static bag, and only the small case CPU's come in, but the best part was, she shipped it in an ENVELOPE
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Opteronfreshoutthepackage.jpg
Mang, was i tired last night, but I couldn't help it, I wanted to get the cooling system in asap.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Preinstallation.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Leaktests.jpg
This is it sitting in my leak test, just letting gravity do what it does, found a leak on my second radiator (can't remember if I mentioned it before  ) So i popped it out to realize the gasket fell out and lost forever, so I took it off completely till I got a replacement.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/installingcoupling.jpg
Fixing couplings. The pump's connections are 3/8" and the tubing I used on all the other components, (radiators, resevoir, cooling block) is 1/4" so I had to add a coupling to connect the pump to the rest of the system. The coupling was kind of costly when I fist thought about it, but they are well made and fit tight. Well made.
camrachi-mishima
03-03-2006, 10:44 AM
So I got all the connections together, except I can't run anything till I mount it to the system. So thats what I did. Here's a pic of the pump snugly fit in the system.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Closeupoftubing.jpg
Mounting the cpu block was easier than I thought, as far as removing the mobo that is. If you've read the post before you'd know I wasn't looking forward to doing over all the mobo connects, well i didn't have to take out much. Thank goodness for the horizontal allignment of the mobo.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Coolingblockinstalled.jpg
I was tightening and tightening the screws on the waterblock, and it felt like it could have gone more, but I didn't want to over do it and crack the board. Sure enough I touched the cpu block and it slid. Not off the cpu, cause it's fastened down, but it proved I could put some more elbow grease on the clamps.
Now that most of the system was in, the cooling block and pump, and I attached the main radiator, the resevoir is attached but not in the case dimensions yet, I had to get it going, the pump is not to be run dry, or else it'll damage it. So you must put in coolant before powering up.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Coolantapplicator.jpg
See my sexy arm, and my high tech coolant applicating device? Hahahah  Don't be fooled, while my arm is sexy, the high techness of the irrigation syringe (60cc piston loop) and a drinking glass. Interesting side note, that scar on my arm is actually a puncture wound from when I got mauled by a dog when I was a kid. I actually had saved the dog when it was a puppy, sure enough it grew up to bite the hell out of me, what a bitch
Now I started filling up
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/bubblesgalore.jpg
and bleeding (pain in the ass)
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Bleedingradiator.jpg
Since this was the one connection that had the least amount of coolant sitting I chose this point to bleed from, atleast for the minute. I stuff up the paper towels to catch any coolant that would have leaked. While they say it's non-conductive, I don't believe them :nono:
More bleeding
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Stillbleeding.jpg
Working out the kinks in the tubing. Since 3/8" tubing is pretty fat, it does not "bend" well, making it bend at too short a space is going to make it kink and fold. Don't want that, now do we :nono:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/Tubingcloseup.jpg
I neglected to take any resevoir shots as it was rarely in the case, I had to keep moving it around to catch the air bubbles I was bleeding out.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/resevoir.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/rewris1/resevoirfrombehind.jpg
Well this is it for right now. Still bleeding th system as at 1:47am I found a replacement gasket for the secondary radiator and in adding it on to the system, I naturally added a wealth of more air in the system. I'm still getting that damn air out. it's even harder now. I'm going to paint the DVD drive black as well to keep the theme, that big gray crap isn't going to cut it. :kakashi4:

---------------------------------------------------------------
Adding water cooling to the system has made it look a little more clustered. How do you plan to remove the heat radiated by tubing/other electricals from the system?
camrachi-mishima
03-03-2006, 04:32 PM
I have no plan on that just yet, as there is no space for fans or blow holes, when I pop in the ATX PSU, it's going to take up another 3/4" so it can't go to the top as an exhaust,. It can't go on the left side of the case as there is a bar that runs parallel to the length of the case and situated a bit over the mid point. So I can't put a fan uncer the bar, cause when I try to take the case off it's gonna get caught on the bar, I can't put it over the bar because there simply isn't enough space.
It can't go on the right side for the same reason, just that it's not just a bar on the right side, it's a bracket. I can't remove the bar on the right side because the case is aluminum and will warp with any force applied to it. I'm not so worried about other heat issues because the case itself is aluminum and will dissapate the heat fast... or fast enough I hope.
As for the cluttered look, there is no disputing that at all. But! I've come to appreciate it, the case is small and tight. Gives it a solid feel, like a block of steel. More pics to come, when I get home I will have to work the kinks out. Bleed the rest of the air out. Decided if I'm going to keep the second radiator or not. And take pics.

This is one of my fav threads to view, really good work by all those involved. I really think camra should have used a larger chasis and abandon this mobile concept since he was going all the way.
A mobile PC to me should have bare essentials and be as light as possible with little room for possible failure.

Those are not the final Glamour shots. Something came up and I decided to post the pc on ebay on some spur-of-the-moment type sh!t, I used the pics I had on my ftp (that I took for those who were curious as to what it was looking like a couple days ago.) The PC was not meant to be sold on ebay either, and what does my ebay auction have to do with this thread? I'm still trying to figure that out. Please, don't come in my thread and try to disrespect or belittle the integrity of my project.

Well this project was also spur of the moment, everything was planned within 5 mins of getting the idea, main source of the idea was crazy who originally suggested the Qpack case. I more or less bought and recieved all the parts within the next three days, as I went along I started adding in the different stuff and more ideas as well.
I totally agree with what you consider a mobile pc to be, but since the case is so small and has that handle I figured the theme would be to fit a fully functional pc into the SFF. I originally got a AMD 3200+ to put in the machine but Crazy found a deal on an Opteron 144, so I popped that in, and planned on O/Cing it as well. Anyways, the PC is a bit heavy, but I fastened everything sufficiently and it is very LAN-able. I still want to paint the DVD-RW black to finish off the look. I also want to mask the wires for the lighting but it is a bit difficult as the case has windows on all sides. It's like trying to hide under a table in a room with windows on every wall.

As you can see there are alot of cabling going on in that one spot.
Oh, incase it wasn't understood, I did not post those pics in this thread for a reason. So don't worry about how it looks on ebay.com
