Very Very interesting read. This is the perfect chance for MAC to take the forefront and gain some marketshare. While I like linux/unix based systems alot, they are not recognized as a gaming platform at least not as much compared to MAC. Blizzard ports many of its games to MAC that should atleast be a plus for some genre of gamers.

With subsidised pricing of a PS3 this sounds like a great move.

SONY HAS stuck an interesting sentence into the very last line of a release that tells us the wonderful technological heights that the console will be able to aspire to. The company said: "The integrated Cell processor will be able to support a variety of operating systems (such as Linux or Apple's Tiger)."

In the upcoming age of online-enabled consoles with plenty of ports and capabilities for extra peripherals - a keyboard, for example – it doesn’t take a genius to spot where Sony might be going with this line of thought.

So, are future consoles a PC replacement? Well, at least a Mac replacement at this stage.

The company does mention just before that little bombshell that "Sony is expected to offer optional hard drives for the PS3 with potential memory capacity of 80 or 120 GB", meaning that the HD space is there for computer replacements.

Interesting strategy. µ

I hoping for LEGIT support for these OS oui, no more underlow stuff. Once official support exists the possibilities are endless. I still say create an expansion card for the PC (similar to what they do with videoediting machines)

Linux will be supported on the ps 3 to some extent of course , but mac is unsure, remember they are recoding their OS to run on X86 and may not bother with cell since they rejected cell as the processor for their line of computers anyway .
Note all the next gen consoles run on an adaptation of power pc architecture... they may be compatible to some extent when it comes to homebrew programs/ OS . Maybe the OS microsoft will bundle on the Xbox 360 will run on the ps3 with a few tweaks .
