AMD and Crytek announced that the 64-bit update to Crytek's and Ubisofts Far Cry, optimized for AMD Athlon 64 processor-based systems, is now available for download. This new version of Far Cry was designed on AMD64 technology and features exclusive 64-bit enhancements.

AMD also used the announcement to denounce the need for multi core processors for gaming by including the following short sentence; Because most games today are single-threaded, gamers performance needs will be best served with the single-core AMD Athlon 64 FX processor.

For the best possible performance AMD claims that the complete 64-bit set is required i.e. AMD64 processor, the recently released Microsoft Windows XP Pro x64 Edition operating system and 64-bit optimized Far Cry software. Gamers will notice larger and more detailed areas to explore, exclusive 64-bit maps, longer view distances, unique and exciting game object textures and a 64-bit exclusive barrel storage area that demonstrates impressive, life-like object physics movement.

An in-game shot from the original Far Cry.

Same shot from the 64-bit version of the game using an AMD Athlon 64 processor. The images demonstrate the enhanced textures. In the 64-bit image you can see the deeper textures on the beach in the Boat level.

For further comparison images follow the screens tab above.

The patches to enable 64-bit Far Cry are now available, follow the download tab above. Current owners of the 32-bit version of Far Cry and Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition can download the patches and begin playing 64-bit Far Cry immediately.

Below are pictures of 64 vs non 64. The logo with 64 means that its 64bit.

1.5GB of patches... that has to be a new record

Apparently the enchancements are more taxing on the videocard than anything else but I guess for marketing they made it a "64" patch to get people to go 64 - too bad they don't let people with the 32 bit OS install the patch or at least make a version that will work with it (for the textures, maps etc).

the xp64 should be out soon....they were testing it and showing it off the other day.....i can see the ifference yes...but cant this jus be a 32 bit patch for the vidcard to handle???

may be a n00b question but stil....is the 64 bit necessary for these computations?

Thats what pweff was saying, i guess it has to be... either that or they helping push the 64 generation.

We would never know if they coudl do the same on 32bit...
