Well seeing as how I gonna be involved in the console thing, people have to be educated as to how the scene works , they got know the games , the major players and the terminology. This is what this thread will seek to do, educate the masses, let's begin with the major worldwide console/arcade tournies.
JAPAN
SUPER BATTLE OPERA
SBO has been the biggest tournament attraction in Japan for the past 3 years. Only the most popular and the most recent noteworthy games make the lineup. SBO usually consists of 6 games with the only staple game for the past 3 years being Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike. There are 1v1,2v2 and 3v3 categories, but theses are game specific. An example would be this year's lineup.
1v1
Tekken 5 - (limited to 64 players which are decided through qualifiers tournies)
King Of Fighters NEOWAVE -(limited to 64 players which are decided through qualifiers tournies)
2v2
Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike - (limited to 32 teams which are decided through qualifiers tournies)
Capcom Fighting Jam/Evolution (limited to 32 teams which are decided through qualifiers tournies)
3v3
Virtua Fighter 4 : Final Tuned - (limited to 32 teams which are decided through qualifiers tournies)
Guilty Gear XX #Reload - (limited to 32 teams which are decided through qualifiers tournies)
A few things have changed this year, most noticably is the addition of Tekken 5 , Capcom Fighting Jam/Evo and KOF NEOWAVE. Gone are the previous staples of Capcom vs SNK2 and Vampire Saviour(Darkstalkers 3). Also 3rd Strike is now 2v2 as opposed to 3v3 in the previous years.
Now I can't begin to describe the production value for this event, the set is usually very much like one you would see on a wrestling program. Large Screens, entrance ramp, smoke effects, custom ring announcer , along with video recording for the purpose of the production of DVDs. In Japan a fighting game tourney can draw a crowd just like a cricket match @ the oval would, THIS EVENT IS BIG.Some pics should follow soon.SBO is sponsored by Arcadia Magazine. Arcadia Magazine is the premier magazine for arcade goers in Japan. It's indepth analysis and up to date strategy sections for fighting games in particular is unmatched.
USA
EVOLUTION
Originally known as the B series tournament. After B4 in 2001 , the staff decided to turn it up a notch, the result was Evolution 2002.3 years later Evolution has taken its place at the top of the tournament rankings. It
is regarded by most(including myself) as the World Championships of the fighting game world. It is usually held in California over the period of 3 days in July/August. The list of games that are run have usually been the same throughout the years , with the only changes being when new versions are released. This year the core games are :
Super Street Fighter 2 : Turbo
Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike
Capcom VS SNK 2
Guilty Gear XX #Reload
Tekken Tag Tournament
Tekken 5
......and of course the Main Event for the last 4 years
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Evolution prides itself (or so they say :P) on the opinion of the fighting game community. So for this year the "fans" will decide what other games make the cut on the tourney line up. Games up for selection are
Mortal Kombat: Deception
Dead or Alive 2: Ultimate
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Capcom Fighting Evolution
Darkstalkers: Vampire Savior
The King of Fighters 2002
Soul Calibur 2
Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution
(Lets face it no MK ,no DOA and no VF gonna make it to EVO who they fooling :P)
Evolution is hosted by the kind staff of Shoryuken.com,TekkenZaibatsu.com,Gamecombos.com and VGONetwork. This year they have joined forces with MLG(Major League Gaming)which looks like it will push the tournament even further. On another note Evo is in Las Vegas this year.
OTHER RECOGNIZED US TOURNEYS
Other than Evolution there are 3 tournies that used to build up excitement to EVO. These are
Texas Showdow
East Coast Championships
Midwest Championships
Even though EVO is regard as the World Championships , the ECC tourney is the main Marvel VS Capcom 2 for the more oldschool heads who don't support Marvel on console. Not like it makes a big difference anyway...Justin Wong is the GOD of the MVC2 world and will more than likely win ECC X this year and then win his 5th MVC2 championship in a row :P
And for the interested parties, I got tons of vids from these things.
More to come soon... including the halo and ssbm scene
