Marvel vs Capcom 4 Rumored For PSX

Multiple sources have told Polygon that Marvel vs Capcom 4 is currently in development and slated for release sometime in 2017.

This comes after months of speculation that a new entry in the Marvel vs Capcom series is on its way.

Although Capcom hasn’t officially announced the game, we’ve been told the company will unveil Marvel vs Capcom 4 this week alongside Sony’s PlayStation Experience event where the Capcom Cup 2016 Street Fighter 5 tournament will be held.

Fans of the series should expect Marvel vs. Capcom 4‘s roster of Marvel characters to draw strongly from the cinematic universe that Marvel Studios has popularized — and has full control over — during the past decade. That means fighting game fans will more likely see characters plucked from The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy films, and not from properties like the X-Men. Expect to see superheroes like Ant-Man and Groot make appearances, with characters of mutant origin — think Wolverine and Magneto — sitting out this entry.

Prior to this, rumors had been going around for months that a new Marvel game was in development at Capcom.

However, NeoGAF user Ryce revealed that Capcom could unveil Marvel vs Capcom 4 at Sony’s PlayStation Experience event on December 1.

“I wasn’t going to share this, but enough beating around the bush: a few other GAFers and myself were told about a Marvel vs. Capcom 4 announcement at PSX. I didn’t think it would happen for all of the obvious reasons, but there you go. We’ll know for certain in eight days,” Ryce wrote in a forum post.

As the forum post circulated, some purported Marvel vs Capcom 4 photos popped up and made their way across the web, fanning the hype fires even more.  These were later confirmed as fake, but the timing of Polygon’s article makes for an interesting situation.

So is it happening? We can’t say for sure but we’re just as excited as everyone else that a new game could be on the way. Sony’s PlayStation Experience kicks off on December 1, 2016 at 1pm EST / 10am PST. Stay tuned.
